More Info on Male Breast Reduction
For men who are self-conscious about excess fat and tissue in their chest, known as gynecomastia, Dr. Mahony offers male breast reduction procedures. Gynecomastia is a relatively common condition in men that is characterized by overdeveloped, disproportionately large breasts that are often feminine in appearance. Dr. Mahony can recontour male chests and remove fatty tissue using a combination of skin removal (if necessary) and tumescent liposuction. Traditional surgical excision is also an option for some.
Men who suffer from gynecomastia may feel ashamed about their appearance. The condition is particularly troubling when it occurs during puberty or adolescence, as young men become the subject of locker-room teasing. While in some cases, the condition will resolve on its own or with weight loss, some men need a surgical solution for their problem. Dr. Mahony will work closely with you at her Connecticut cosmetic surgery practice, where she has helped many men improve their appearance through cosmetic breast surgery.

Is it possible to exercise away male breast tissue?
No, unfortunately it isn’t possible to spot reduce the soft tissue build-up in male breasts. However, chest exercises are great for strength and your metabolism and you can (and should!) return to all strength training exercises about 3-4 weeks after your procedure.
Is it possible for the fatty breasts to return even after liposuction?
The procedures used in male breast reduction result in permanent removal of the fat and glandular tissue. However, steroid use or significant weight can can cause the condition to appear again. We’ll discuss what to avoid and your specific case in our consultation.
What is gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is the medical term used to describe enlargement of the breast tissue in men and boys. Medical problems that can contribute to gynecomastia include thyroid, kidney and liver issues. Also, it can occur as side effect of some medications. Most of the time it’s related to an imbalance between estrogen and testosterone, where estrogen is in excess. It’s most commonly seen in male infants, during puberty and in middle aged to older men. These periods are often associated with changing testosterone levels.
What causes “man boobs” that are soft but still too big?
When the breast is enlarged due to fat deposits (not breast tissue), we call that pseudogynecomastia or lipomastia. This is often seen in middle aged or older men who also have some skin laxity.
How would I know if I have gynecomastia or lipomastia?
In gynecomastia, the enlarged tissue is usually firm, rubbery and centered behind the nipple on both sides. It can at times be tender. In comparison, lipomastia is more likely to effect the entire breast and is softer, more regular and not tender. It will feel like fat.
Will gynecomastia go away on its own?
For boys who have not reached puberty, it may regress on its own as the testosterone/estrogen balance shifts. It’s unlikely that it will regress in middle aged or older men.
What is the treatment for gynecomastia?
Treatment may include liposuction, direct excision of the tissue through a small incision, or a combination of both. When lax skin is also part of the complaint, additional incisions often are needed to take up the “slack,” similar to a female breast lift.
What’s the recovery like from surgery for gynecomastia?
You may be surprised to learn that the recovery is pretty smooth. There is always some chest soreness but since the muscle is not effected, most men describe this as just discomfort. In fact most find this easily managed with ice, massage and anti-inflammatories. Most men return to work within 3-5 days and unrestricted activity in 3-4 weeks!
